8- Motivate yourself & get family or friend support. Doing it alone might be hard and trying to bringing in a friend or family member will be a great help. It doesn't matter what you weigh. Height and weight charts are meaningless. What really matters is the composition of your body - how much of your body is muscle and how much is fat. An understanding of body composition is one of the ways you'll escape the gravitational pull of the diet mentality. Body composition is a much more sophisticated way to see your body. Forget the scales and the height and weight charts. Concentrate on body composition.

Body composition testing measures how lean your body is. Remember, getting lean means to enhance your lean body mass - your muscles, your bones, your organs and the fluids of your body. Body composition is the only accurate way to measure how lean you are.

We have a real challenge in this country. We live in the fattest nation on earth. The average American male is 26% body fat. The average American female is 36% body fat. Let's put that in perspective. If this average male with 26% body fat weighs 200 pounds, it means he's carrying around 52 pounds of fat. Fat is dead weight. Every pound of fat adds 7 miles to your circulatory system. Your body stores your toxins in your fat cells. The more fat you have on your body, the more toxic your body is.

Example. A person who is 50 pounds over his or her ideal body weight has a risk of cancer that is 18 times higher than the average. According to cutting edge research performed at Tufts University Medical School, the best single indicator of whether you're aging successfully is your body fat percentage. The leaner you are, the more successfully you age. You can't be too lean.

According to exercise physiology research what should your body composition be? Men should be 15% body fat or less regardless of age. Women should be 22% body fat or less regardless of age.

15% body fat for men and 22% body fat for women will put you into good to very good health. What if you want excellent health? What if you want to be as healthy as you could possibly be? For male athletes or men who want excellent health, the range is 6 to 12% - regardless of age. For women it's 12 to 18%.

How do you measure body composition? There are various methods. Hydrostatic weighing is the gold standard of body composition testing. It's the most accurate, but not very practical. Skin fold calipers are nearly as accurate, a lot more practical, and a lot more comfortable for you.

Fat is stored in 3 different areas of our body. Subcutaneously - which is between the skin and the muscle. Intramuscularly - which is within the muscle (otherwise known as marbeling in steak). And, between your organs.

To obtain your body composition, it will be necessary to measure the thickness of your skin fold in 7 different locations on your body using a skin fold caliper. It will very accurately measure the thickness of your skin fold in millimeters. These numbers will be entered into a very complex mathematical formula that has been developed by exercise physiology research.

What will you learn? You'll learn your body fat percentage which is a relationship between the amount of fat you have compared with your lean body mass. You'll learn how many pounds of your total body weight are fat. And how many pounds are lean body mass. And you'll learn your true ideal body weight. How is that calculated? The computer will take your lean body mass - your fat free weight - and add to that the optimal amount of body fat 15% if you're a guy. 22% if you're a gal. Now you have your true ideal body weight based on your body - not some height and weight chart.

Remember, you won't always lose weight every week. But this is where the measurements really help. If you don't lose weight, but your measurements get smaller, you've gotten leaner. Remember, if you gain one pound of muscle and lose one pound of fat, your weight hasn't changed, but you're leaner.

I saw a video a while back of one of Georges St. Pierre's MMA conditioning workouts. In it his trainer had him doing 80 lb. dumbbell presses for one set immediately followed by a plyometric medicine ball press. Basically, as soon as GSP dropped the weights, the trainer standing above passes him a heavy med ball then GSP presses it as fast as possible releasing the ball at the top. The trainer catches it and then repeats.

The heavy DB presses followed by the plyo presses are a great MMA conditioning exercise; it simulates the pushing strength and power needed to reverse or sweep an opponent when they are in a top dominant position. This MMA conditioning exercise develops power in the pectorals (chest), anterior deltoids (front part of shoulders), and triceps.

Here are the details of what I call the Plyometric Power Press:

How to perform this MMA conditioning drill

Get a partner
Lie on back on the ground or bench with your arms outstretched
Your partner stands on the box holding the medicine ball at arm's length.
Your partner drops the medicine ball into your hands.
Catch the ball with elbows bent
Allow the ball to come towards your chest
Extend the arms to propel the ball into the air as hard as you can then partner catches it
Keep the catch time to the shortest time possible

How to add this MMA conditioning drill into your workout

3 to 5 sets
10 to 20 repetitions/set
Quality (high, straight) of the vertical toss is far more important than quantity

Remember, you want to do this exercise right after going heavy (6-8RM) on the dumbbell or barbell benchpress to increase your upper-body anaerobic conditioning and power-under-fatigue, all of which are key components in MMA.

Then, ask God the Father in Jesus' name to bless your food and go ahead and eat. You'll be on your way to lose weight God's way.

Your Declaration

Here is your faith declaration you will speak and declare before each meal: "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Therefore, I will eat moderately and healthily. I refuse to overeat. Body, I command you in Jesus' name to eat correctly in a way that pleases God. I enjoy eating nutritious food, eating moderately and getting the correct amount of bodily exercise. Soul, I command you also to obey this faith declaration in Jesus' name."

The key to your success will be your diligent commitment to do this every day and not just when you feel like it. Aside from making these declarations before eating, I suggest you do this at least an hour a day at a time set aside for just making these declarations. Why at least an hour? Food addiction is becoming a serious problem and it is not restricted to adults. Even kids can suffer from addiction to sugar and certain types of foods that can cause serious health problems like obesity.

It is not only addiction to the particular types of foods loaded with sugar or as they are termed, junk foods, but there is a good amount of emotional attachment as well. The craving has similar effect cocaine or any other drug has on the human brain.

Sugar and fat can produce cravings

Experts in addiction and those who are doing real time research to keep people off addiction have revealed that studies have shown that sugar in itself can produce similar cravings.

It is not that only adults can be affected by sugar addiction, but kids can also face similar problems. Amphetamine and cocaine addiction are doing tremendous damage to the human brain and people end up with serious emotional hazards as well.

Experts have also shown a direct link between sugar and fat food addiction to brain endorphins or the opiates of the brain. It has the same effect drug and cocaine addiction has on the addict.

HOW FOOD ADDITION HAPPENS

Emotional eating is not always "just" emotional eating. Sometimes, it is a full-fledged addiction with obvious-and very serious-consequences. Acknowledging this addiction is the first step. Just ask yourself how many people you know who have endangered their health through eating! The fact is, once food is "installed" in an individual's mental computer as a way to deal with problems or stress, it can become so deeply embedded in his or her mind and so important that he or she would literally die to keep it.

It is hard to describe the intensity of this addiction because it is so commonplace and so easily disguised and blended into "just" eating. As one of my patients said so clearly, "Nothing is going to get between me and my eating. I am always ravenously hungry, and when the burrito stand is in view, I must eat."

No one can stop me.

I don't want to stop.

I can't stop.

I won't let anybody try to trick me into wanting to stop.

Stay away! This is sacred territory that I will defend with all of my strength.

These are the sorts of messages you receive when you just ask a person to consider their emotional eating patterns. This is what happens when you just suggest that maybe you are confusing emotional hunger with biological hunger. The resistance to dealing with this addiction at all is the strongest indicator of how much the addicted person is motivated to stay addicted. Yes, once you are addicted, you are also motivated to stay that way.

How Does One Become Addicted to Food?

The beginning of food addiction is a bit different for everyone because it can start at different ages. However, there is one universal theme. Somewhere along the lines you learned that eating can soothe the ordinary hurts in life. We all learn that, because it is true, has always been true an always will be true.

All addiction follows the same basic pattern. You are in a distressed state of mind, and the substance-whether it be alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, cocaine, or a cupcake-offers you almost instant, albeit temporary, relief from your distress. If it works the first time, you do it again and again. When it becomes the mechanism of choice, that's when you become addicted. It is the short route to the resolution of personal unhappiness. But if you are addicted now, it means you became too dependent on this mechanism and you created a short circuit to feeling good that now works against you.

Food addiction is a short circuit in many ways. Literally, it is the fastest route to feeling better. But it is also a short circuit in another sense, the more you use this mechanism, the more you bypass some essential work of life and short circuit the new learning and new ways of managing your feelings that can make life more fulfilling and a lot easier. You are trading the short-term gain for a real long-term loss.

The more you use it as a short circuit, the more you avoid doing what is necessary to resolve the unhappiness in real life, in real time. The more you avoid, the less you learn about how to manage your mind and your life, or at least those critical parts of you that have not fully matured and have been brought under rational control. It's a vicious cycle. The more you avoid learning, the more you need the cure, which makes you avoid learning all the more, which...makes you eat!

Why Can't I Just Stop?

It is our contention that since this addiction is a learned pattern, you can unlearn it! It is not mysterious, even though it seems so because it is so powerful and so embedded in ordinary thinking patterns. That's the good news.

While it is a learned behavior, we are not suggesting that the unlearning process is just a matter of education. No, once food has become installed as a primary way to regulate moods and emotions, it almost becomes an essential part of the person's mind. That's the bad news.

In cases where emotional eating has become food addiction, food is no longer food. The taste is largely irrelevant. It's the mental effect that is being looked for in the meal, not the calories or the flavor. Some have described their relationship between themselves and food as that of jealous lovers who want to possess, horde, hide and clandestinely have one another for their own.

There is a great deal of truth in that description, but it doesn't quite get to the quality I hear in my patients. What I hear sounds more like the eating pattern has become a part of their mental selves the same way an arm is part of their bodily selves, and is defended similarly. You wouldn't let anybody convince you to cut off your arm. In the same way, the person addicted to food won't let anybody convince them to give up this mechanism of internal control.

The bottom line is that food addiction has the same imperative quality as addiction has in the heroin addict who has to have his "fix," or the smoker who must have one more drag, or the alcoholic who must have one more drink. Food addicts can't bear the thought of refusing themselves satisfaction through food.

Florence Williams, a mother, describes the incredible experience between mother and child during nursing, and reveals the primordial power of food addiction in this quote from a New York Times Magazine article on Sunday, January 9, 2005:

"...every time we nurse our babies, the love hormone oxytocin courses out of our pituitaries like a warm bath. Human milk is like ice cream, Valium and Ecstasy all wrapped up in two pretty packages. For a mother and child, nursing is perhaps the most intimate of acts. Evolutionary biologists call it matrotrophy; eating one's mother. My daughter is not only physically attached to me; she is taking from me all that I can give her. Each time I lift my shirt, she pants and flaps her arms and legs as if it were Christmas. Then she settles in, both of us wholly reassured that this is the best, safest and most satisfying food she could eat."

Although not all mothers nurse, this is still the prototypic experience of the kind of bliss that we seek to recreate, in one way or another, the rest of our lives-especially when turning to food for comfort. We seek the temporary pleasure and relief, the sense that for now at least everything seems all right, when moments before it seemed as if everything was all wrong. And when this natural desire becomes addiction, most people refuse to believe that they can continue to function if they give it up.

So you want to solve your weight problem? I can help you. I solved my weight problem twenty-five years ago when I lost 140 lbs. permanently, after twenty-five years of being overweight. Now I teach others. I'm a psychotherapist and the author of The Anderson Method, my successful weight loss self-help book that describes the program I teach clients and other clinical professionals so they can help their clients too. It's getting high marks from doctors and behavioral professionals all over the country as well as the clients who have succeeded with it themselves. Here, I'll reveal a few of the secrets you'll find in its pages.
One of the first things my clients want to know is what they should and should not eat in order to solve their weight problem. Are there are any "weight loss products" that can help? The answer to the first part of that question is complicated. There really are no "good" or "bad" foods when it comes to weight control success. I and my clients succeed because we've trained ourselves to have habits of eating the foods we like in ways that keep us fit. Every single client has his or her own "diet" made up of foods of their own choosing, and it has become a lifestyle rather than a temporary fix. It's complicated to explain how that comes about, impossible in less than a book.
The second part of the question is much easier to answer. The answer is YES! There are some great "weight loss products" that can help. First, let me give you a little history of my experience with them.
The first weight loss product I heard of in my teens was "diet pills", amphetamines that took away your appetite, miracle pills for compulsive overeaters like I had become. I heard about them from my friend whose parents were a doctor and a nurse. His dad also used them to stay awake for days at a time, and his mom became a house cleaner extraordinaire. They called it "speed". The diet pill industry went crazy for a while, literally, until drug use got a bad name because of all the ill effects, like death. We discovered "speed kills", and while amphetamine (AKA methamphetamine or "meth" and "crystal meth") is popular again as a "recreational" drug, almost everyone knows that speed is a ticket to misery -either jail, the hospital or the grave. Those diet pills were incredibly destructive. New diet pills keep being "invented" and advertised, but most are scams and none are on my list of good weight loss products. I keep checking every time I hear of one, and I'll be the first to tout one that helps more than it hurts. So far, there are none, unless you're clinically depressed and overeating and find that an antidepressant helps with both, which they can. See your doctor if you think one might help.
When I was a kid, the first diet product I tried was Metracal, a thick milk-like substance that came in chocolate and vanilla, the first of the liquid meal substitutes. I drank that for a while instead of lunch, until it began smelling like vitamin pills and I started gagging every time I got it to my lips. Then there was Ayds, a little chocolate candy that was supposed to have magical weight loss properties. I think the AIDS epidemic killed them off. There was TAB in the 60's, the first diet soda from Coke, sweetened with saccharin (yuck) and later they introduced Fresca, a grapefruit flavored diet drink. I preferred the Fresca. The 60's and 70's saw an explosion of diets, diet products and diet programs and I was tempted to try all of them in my twenty-five year career as a weight loss failure. Fortunately, because I followed a professional career path that led me to behavioral science, addictions, habit management and behavioral counseling, I discovered that the solution to my problem was not in "weight loss products" but in personal change through "behavioral medicine".
I learned that as much as we'd like to deny it, the solution to our weight problem lies in acquiring a lifestyle where we habitually eat fewer calories than we use. There is no magical way to get around this. We can eat any kind of food we want, but we have to get the calories within the right "limits". And that's where the right "weight loss products" can have great value. Success in permanent weight control is the result of programming ourselves with calorically correct habits, using sophisticated behavioral methods. Staying slim becomes automatic and habitual, eating food we like that coincidently contains the right number of calories. The products I list below can make it easier as well as decidedly more pleasurable to succeed in this. The order I list them in is random.
1) I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray
One of the most important things my clients learn in their first week of my program is the source of the calories that made them fat. They don't eat any differently than they always have, but they look up the calories of everything they eat. Then, miracles start happening. They automatically start looking for ways to decrease the amount of calories they consume and increase the volume of food per calorie. The result is that they become big vegetable eaters, even if they have always shunned them, and even though no one even suggests it to them. It's automatic! Then they start looking for ways to make the veggies more enjoyable. Real butter and fatty sauces add lots of calories, but this spray "butter" adds next to nothing! There is less than one calorie per squirt! Ten squirts are less than ten calories, and your veggies are covered with a tasty buttery glaze! It will make any vegetable better.
2) Egg Beaters
If you're not paying attention, breakfast can be the highest calorie meal of the day, especially if you eat out, often over 1000 calories. Figuring out how to keep the calories low early in the day can be one of the most important things you can do to keep your calories down. Then, you can have a decent budget for the evening meal. Also, the source of the morning calories, be it carbs, fats or proteins, will have a big effect on your appetite. If you eat carbs in the morning, especially simple carbs like sugary or fruity stuff, you'll stimulate your appetite and need to work harder to restrain yourself from overeating. So, a high protein breakfast is a good start. It will be more "filling" and stay with you longer. Eggs are a good choice, but they have lots of cholesterol, and they're 75 calories each. The eggs substitutes are half the calories and no cholesterol! So, you can have the equivalent of two scrambled eggs and a piece of diet toast for a little over 100 calories! Add a real egg to the mix to improve the texture, or make it a veggie omelet, and you are still very low in calories, and it will keep you fueled and satisfied for a very long time!
3) Walden Farms zero calorie salad dressings
Two tablespoons of their balsamic vinaigrette is less than five calories, so I can make a big salad with lettuce, spinach, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, and peppers for about fifty calories total. I can have that with a Michael Angelo lasagna, a 4oz. hamburger with bun or a lamb chop, and have a very decent low calorie meal. Walden Farms makes six different "zero calorie" dressings (they get to label a serving zero if it is less than 5 calories), though the only one I like is the balsamic vinaigrette. Clients have liked the others and you might too!
4) Low calorie frozen dinners
"TV" dinners were invented when I was a kid when "labor saving" products became the rage. Within a generation it seemed like everyone had an automatic dishwasher, an electric clothes dryer, a self-propelled lawn mower, and an automatic garage door opener. At the same time, we looked for ways to make the evening meal easier and faster. Drive-in restaurants seemed to expand the waistline, but in time, food companies invented lo-cal frozen dinners that help us shrink it. Today we have an array of very decent frozen dinners from Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, Smart Ones, Kashi and others that appeal to the senses as well as the caloric budget. Many of these offerings are less than 300 calories and are great to have in the freezer when your plan to prepare the perfect fresh meal goes awry.
5) Diet Soda Pop
We've come a long way from TAB and Fresca made with saccharin. Today, there are countless zero calorie drinks that are sweetened with artificial sweeteners, like Nutri-Sweet and Splenda, that are every bit as flavorful as sugars. I have come full circle and now my favorite beverage for lunch and 'tween times is my old friend Fresca, only it's much better than the original. As far as I'm concerned, diet drinks are one of the most important weight control products ever created. I can have a flavorful drink with my lunch and during the day that I don't have to limit or think about. Certainly, water is a better hydrator, and I drink plenty of that, but if it weren't for diet drinks, I know I'd fall victim to the temptation to have something tastier with lunch and during breaks. As far as I'm concerned, they're a life saver.
There are lots of other foods that you'll discover that are great "weight loss products" when you quit trying to find someone else to do all the work for you. For instance, if you start looking up the calories in regular food, you'll find that a good old fashioned hot dog and bun with mustard, relish and onions is less than 300 calories! I often had one for lunch as I lost 140 lbs.! Permanent weight loss is within everyone's grasp, and my book will teach you what you need to do to succeed. There is work involved, but if you've gotten through high school, you've done a lot more and a lot harder work than you'll need to do to solve your weight problem. If you really want to solve your weight problem and you're willing to do some reasonable work, you are ready to succeed.
